Howe ISD Health Policies

Any child who has a fever must remain out of school until they have gone 24 hours without fever on their own. This means they have not been given Tylenol, Advil, or other fever reducing medicines to keep the fever down. A fever is a temperature over 100.0.

A child who has vomited may be sent home at the Nurses discretion. Students with vomiting & diarrhea must stay out of school for 24 hours as well.

If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, or other infection, they must remain out of school until they are fever free for 24 hours AND have had 24 hours of antibiotic treatment.

If your child has the flu, they can be contagious for up to 5 days. Please keep them home until they are feeling well enough to remain in class for the whole day. Consult your physician for the appropriate amount of time that your child should remain at home.

A student with a rash or skin condition that is draining or has pustules must have a doctor’s note to be in class until the rash has healed or is no longer draining/contagious.

If your child goes/stays home for illness, they may not return later in the day for parties, sports or other school activities. A child who isn’t well enough for classroom instruction needs to remain home from other events as well.

Any child who misses 3 or more days of school due to illness needs a doctor’s note indicating why they were out of school.

Medications at School

A student may have medications administered to him/her by the school nurse under the following conditions:

  • ALL over-the-counter medication is brought to the school in its original bottle by the parent or guardian and presented to the nurse or office personnel with specific instructions for its use. We will follow package instructions unless ordered differently by a physician.

  • ALL prescription medication must be brought to the school in its original container with the pharmacy label and instructions clearly legible and presented to the nurse or office personnel.

  • ALL medications must be dropped off to the Nurse or front office with the proper documentation filled out. Students are not permitted to carry medications in their backpacks, for the safety of all students. A medication administration record will be kept showing when the medication was given

Special Health Conditions

If your child has special health concerns, please contact the school nurse to discuss them or develop a treatment plan. It is important that school personnel be aware of allergies, asthma, seizures or other conditions that could present themselves while your child is attending school.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping ALL our students and staff healthy!
