Dress Code

Howe High School

The dress and grooming standards of the Howe ISD are meant to promote a positive, orderly and professional learning environment.  At Howe ISD, we believe that our young people should dress for success.  The following guidelines are representative of our community standards and are most conducive to creating an environment where the focus is on instruction.

Permitted Styles

Special Comments

Tops

  • Short or long-sleeved, collared shirt

  • Pull over sweater/sweatshirt

  • Crew neck (rounded t-shirt)

  • Turtleneck and mock turtleneck

 

  • No visible cleavage

  • All shirts must be completely buttoned with exception of neck button

  • No spandex or other stretch material

  • All shirts must extend below the hip line (no midriffs)

  • Tops worn with tights/ leggings must go past fingertips with arms extended down. Mid thigh area.

  • No sheer or see-through

  • All shirts must have some sort of sleeve (cap sleeves are permitted)

Bottoms

  • Four- or five-pocket jeans (plain designs/logo must fit within guidelines below)

  • Pleated or non-pleated slacks

  • Wind pants

  • Tights/ leggings that are not see through and are accompanied by a shirt that extends beyond the fingertips fully extended

  • All pants must be worn above the hip level, no shorts.

  • No excessively baggy style, legs no wider than length of shoe

  • No holes with skin showing above the knee level-top of knee cap(or excessively large holes)

  • Belts must be worn inside belt loops at all times and appropriate size

  • No studs, brads, or other excessive adornment on belts

  • Must be hemmed properly at bottom

  • No pajamas

 

Skirts/Dresses

Capris

  • Hem of skirt or dress must be no more than 3โ€ above the knee

  • Dresses must have sleeves (cap sleeves are permitted)

  • Capris must extend to mid-calf length

  • No holes or skin showing above the knee

  • Hemmed properly at bottom

  • No low-cut neckline on dresses

  • Skirts worn with tights/ leggings still must extend to 3โ€ above the knee

  • No shorts are allowed.

Outerwear

  • Sweatshirt

  • Hooded sweatshirt-w/hood off

  • Jacket, Coat, Windbreaker

  • School-sponsored Jacket

  • Must comply with all above โ€œTopsโ€ guidelines

  • No trench coats

  • Must remain completely unbuttoned, unzipped and hoods off

Footwear

  • Closed toe shoes

  • Flip-flops/sandals

  • No house shoes

  • Shoes must match

Hair

All students should wear their hair in a clean, neat, and well-groomed fashion.  Hair should be worn in a fashion that is out of the face, not covering the eyes, and of a natural color.   Hairstyles shall not, in the opinion of the administration, cause a safety hazard or distraction to the educational process.

Natural Hair colors are black, brown, blonde, natural red.  Maroon/burgundy/bright red are not natural red colors.

Other

  • No hats

  • No Shorts

  • No visible body piercing, other than in the ears and a single stud in the nose.

    This includes spikes or other backings to ear rings.

  • No offensive language or symbols depicting death (skulls, weapons, drug or alcohol related).

  • No heavy metal, chains or gang-related clothing.

  • All clothing must fit appropriately, not excessively tight or large.

  • No costumes including animals and animal related accessories.

  • Headphones, earbuds, or other similar devices are not allowed at school.

Administrators will have complete and final judgment on all matters concerning interpretation of the student dress code. Matters concerning the appearance and dress not specifically covered in the dress code policy that is disruptive to the educational process is not permitted.
